This morning, visit Mihintale, the hallowed site where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka, featuring rocky stairways, shrines, and panoramic views. Continue to the colossal Aukana Buddha statue, a masterpiece of stone carving dating back to the 5th century. Arrive in Sigiriya by evening and settle into your hotel.
Begin early with a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, famed for its wild elephant gatherings and open landscapes. Later, explore the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa, once the medieval capital, with ruins of palaces, shrines, and graceful Buddha images. Return to Sigiriya and enjoy a restful evening.
Climb the magnificent Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress in the morning, ascending past frescoes and ancient stairways to enjoy breathtaking views from the summit. Continue with a village encounter that offers insight into rural life and traditions, before visiting a local wood carving gallery. Later, explore the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, adorned with murals and Buddha statues, along with the striking Golden Temple at its base.
Depart for Kandy with enriching cultural stops along the way. At Nalanda Gedige, admire a rare fusion of Hindu and Buddhist architecture in a serene setting. In Matale, visit a colorful Hindu temple before continuing to a spice garden, where the traditions and uses of Sri Lanka’s famed spices are introduced.
